Inspired by youth and queer culture, where long nights are a must and sleeping is insignificant, Bobbi Essers paints her cherished friendships in large paintings.
Bobbi, a young realistic painter from The Netherlands, deliberately doesn’t paint faces. That makes it hard to really know what or who you’re looking at and gender consciously becomes a mystery. This makes it very intimate for her and her friends.
The small works usually are snapshots of friends, youth and queer culture where clothing, skin, moles, tattoos and nightlife images have a big part. In the large works, Bobbi combines multiple pictures, making them more layered and complex. The viewer is free to fill in the blanks themselves.
